- The problem or struggle between the protagonist and antagonist is the constant of the Hunger Games. Katniss lives a rough life in district twelve and her sister is chosen to participate in the hunger games when her name is pulled at the public reaping. Because Katniss so desperately wants to protect her sister, she wants to go instead and so she volunteers. This strengthens the anger that Katniss already has towards the Capital.
- Throughout the novel, Katniss has to make a decision between whether people are trustworthy or not.
- Katniss expresses a slight hate towards the Capital and does not understand their way of life and how they are capable of pulling joy from it.
